not sure what this means hope someone could help me out

Without knowing what you typed to get that response it is impossible to answer.

I typed nohup ./startup &

Usually with MUDs you don't need to run the "startup" file. This often works.


cd area
../src/smaug      <-- or whatever the MUD name is

Without more details we are guessing. Are you using Cygwin?
